Martin Luther King said, no matter if you walk or crawl, just keep moving forward. This isn’t an exact quote but you get the idea. Well, I’m making moves.
I’m moving my body, hitting the gym, I’m moving into a new role at work, I’ve moved in with my boyfriend and hit the 7 month mark.
So far, so good. But the short, dark days of January are here and momentum has slowed down. Way down. It’s week 3 of 2016 and last night found me curled up with a box of Raisinettes, completely cozy with Netflix.

I think it is all the time indoors because I ponder a lot.
I spend time thinking about what motivates us.. even as I know we all have different motivators. I think a lot. I call my sister. She listens and then breaks it down for me. (You’ll hear a lot more from her as her advice is pretty golden.)
I’m currently motivated to be physically fit and to accept myself as I am. First one is pretty straightforward, the second one is a work in progress. Don’t blame New Years’ Eve, it’s not all its fault.
The New Year started off with a lot of excitement. I was geared up for some changes, more like areas of focus instead of resolutions. In hindsight, I would compare it to the beginning of a race, I was off and running for a couple weeks with enthusiasm and a plan. I’m still motivated but have hit a stride with regular movement but the adrenaline has worn off.
Nothing wrong with that right? This is what I think of as the point where real change occurs. Real movement is moving forward even if slowly, one foot in front of the other. Exercise has become a habit, eating well is a habit although it takes a lot of preparation. Totally cool with that.
The rub of it is the inner voice that can knock you down sometimes. The doubt that you are doing enough or have made any progress this week. Do you really have the spark to keep moving towards the life you want when you are tired? A bit bored? It seems unattainable? Well, I would love to hear what works for you. I’ll go first.
This is how I moved through it this week.
- First, I wanted candy so I had some Hot Tamales and Raisinettes. Totally fine to treat a craving for a day. I lounged, watched NetFlix and just let it hang out. Believe it or not, I don’t do this very often.
- I seek out advice. I browse magazines, online blogs. My favorite is O magazine. The January issue has some great articles about ‘spark’ as an energy source. Gretchen Rubin’s book ‘Better Than Before’ is doing it for me as well. She is a guru at unraveling why we do what we do and how we can affect change in our lives.
- I found it helps to write down my workouts each week on a note card so I can look back and see what I’m doing. 4 workouts in 7 days is nothing to laugh at. Flipping through 6 weeks of these cards gives me a tangible thrill far and above using my phone app.
- I write down if I was able to do something new at the gym or experienced more strength during a yoga class. These small changes matter and are the results I’m looking for.
- Get poked. Yup, Acupuncture. This treatment works really well for me. I don’t know how it works specifically but I know it works. Being so in tune with my body, the aches and pains can build up, causing some real lethargy and inertia. Getting acupuncture irons out all the kinks and smoothes out the edges. I compare it to a muscle relaxer without the nasty side effects and with a ton of tranquility. Being still and letting the energy move through you and around you is amazingly grounding and lets me reset in a way that feels right.
- I call a trusted advisor: in this case it is my sister. She is hilarious. She works as a mental health supervisor so she has seen a lot of human behavior gone right and wrong. I love her. Just talking to someone is a great way to move forward.
